What is Pre-Sanctified Liturgy?
The Liturgy of the Pre-Sanctified Gifts is a special liturgical service in Orthodox churches during Lent. The word Pre-Sanctified refers to the consecrated gifts of the Body and Blood of Christ (Holy Communion) distributed to the faithful during the service. The pre-sanctified gifts are consecrated at a Divine Liturgy celebrated the previous Sunday. The Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts is composed of Vesper prayers and hymns leading to reception of Holy Communion. Vespers consist of a series of evening prayers, chanting of Psalms and other verses. The Liturgy also includes scripture readings, solemn incensing, and the solemn blessing with a candle in which the priest proclaims, “The light of Christ enlightens everyone.” All who have an opportunity to attend Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts are participating in a beautifully reverent service with foundations in the early centuries of the church. It is a service in keeping with the themes of the Great Fast; an enlightening time for the faithful to focus on the context of God’s plan for salvation.
Join in each Wednesday during lent at 5:15pm. Following the service, all are invited to a lenten potluck.
